Verses of Impact:

“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:1-4

What an incredible way to start a letter to the suffering Hebrew saints! All I need say here is, It is Jesus; it is Jesus; it is Jesus! Oh what a wonderful Savior we have, that is if we have experienced the new birth of grace through faith and the redemption from sin that we once walked. It is Jesus!

Guest Commentary:

Guest commentaries for today are from sister Lynn Clark  and brother Mark Case.

What a Savior

The letter to the Hebrews is all about the Person and Work of Jesus, and how He and His work are far superior to the Old Covenant Priests and Priesthood.  Chapter one breaks out right away proclaiming that while God has sent many messengers over the course of time, Jesus is far greater than all of them!  He is even greater than the angels!  What is more, God commands the angels to worship Him!

The first chapter of Hebrews presents an exciting, yet profound image of the Son Himself.  Notice these accolades God gives to Him: the heir of all things; through whom God made the worlds; the brightness of God’s glory; and the express image of God’s Person!  After reading that introduction about Jesus, one may imagine that everything that could be said, has been said; but not so!  God the Father goes on from there to address Jesus as the Firstborn into the world, as LORD; and He even calls Him God!  Then after naming His glorious attributes such as righteousness, everlasting, and unchangeable, He proudly presents Jesus with the seat at God’s own right hand!  Wow!

Well, with chapter one the stage is set.  Jesus Christ is the One above all others past, present, and future!  And the New Covenant with its glorious Priesthood that He ushers in is far above the Old… eternally higher!   He was the fulfillment of the Old Covenant types and shadows that were designed to fade away at His coming; and indeed they do fade in comparison!

What an introduction to Jesus!  What a Son!  What a Messenger!  What a High Priest!  And to imagine that by His power, we can become like Him!  Hallelujah!  What a Savior!

Hebrews 1:1-9 nuggets

God spoke through his prophets to our forefathers in the Old Testament many times. God making know his righteousness and his ways. Showing his love and his Judgments.

In these last days God speaks to us by his Son, for God says Jesus is superior to the prophets and the angels, He whom has been appointed heir over all things, he whom is the radiance of God’s Glory and the exact representation of his very being.

After he provided our salvation for our sins, our purification, he sat down at the right hand side of the Father in heaven. He radiates God’s glory the very essence of God’s nature. Through the Son the Father is revealed. He is eternal, for God has said of his son. “Your Throne O God shall last forever and ever.

May we rejoice and hold on to these truths looking forward to our full redemption in his son our eternal Lord and Savior. I cherish how he loves us so much he has provided a way of communication giving us access for Jesus to speak to us, many times through the Holy Spirit, I know we can trust him for he is the exact representation of the Father.

Blessing to all my brothers and sisters, Lynn

After Thoughts:

1. According to verse 2, when did the “last day’s” begin?

2. Think about how powerful and detailed the first four verses are, especially as an introduction to the Hebrew Christians of the day and the Jewish mindset that was their culture. Christ is everything and the fulfillment of the law. In application to your life, is Christ stamped upon you such that your life focus and walk with Him is truly to know Him and praise Him?

3. “He has inherited a more excellent name…”(vs.4) If His name be so majestic, powerful and excellent, then has His name branded you such that when people think about you they think about Christ? Are you seen as meek, humble and loving? Is this a deep reality or a shallow faded mask?

4. In your Christian life, are you known more by the ministries you are involved in, the amount you post and are liked on facebook, and/or by a mental theology of big words, or are you known by the style of your life, prayer, piety and a love for the souls of those God has created?

“No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. The pulpit can be a shop window to display one’s talents; the prayer closet allows no showing off.”

“The New is in the Old concealed, the Old is in the New revealed.” (where I first heard it)

Wow, I’m looking at that v. 6, “Let all the angels of God worship Him,” and I’m wondering how that would just blow me away if I had been raised as a good little Jewish boy, instructed in all the laws of Moses, and having it drilled into my skull that God is one and not a man. This writer of Hebrews is embarking on a gargantuan task to try to communicate this new word from God “in these last days” to a people that are prone to having some problems with it, and being tempted to turn away from it. Jesus is truly awesome, beyond all that we can imagine!

YES, it is all about Jesus. We must seek him. Oh the beauty of his presence for those who love him, in times of great joy, in times of teasing, he is our good shepherd. I never want to live my life without him. Praise You Jesus.

Man, you truly hit the nail on the head there. When we can see this through the true perspective (the Jewish perspective), this set of verses is amplified and magnified so intensely. Wow!!!

  2. I’m writing on a book which start with going through Hebrews.
Allow me to share from that book without being 100 % in line with the commentary every day. If not please give me a hint and I will be in line.
    Hebrew Chapter One
JESUS is the one through whom God speaks.
JESUS (and we together with Him if we believe as the Scripture say) will inherit the Kingdom and all things.
JESUS was there when God created the universe.
    JESUS radiates God’s Glory
JESUS expresses the character and image of God
JESUS sustains all things by the mighty power of His command
    JESUS cleans us from sin
JESUS is seated at the right hand of God
JESUS is born of God the Father
JESUS was brought into this world by God
JESUS is called God by the Father
    JESUS’ Throne endures forever
JESUS rules with a sceptre of justice
JESUS loves justice and hates evil
JESUS is anointed by the Father
JESUS laid the foundations of the world at the beginning of time.
JESUS made the heavens with His hands
    JESUS will remain forever
JESUS will fold up and discard the heaven and the earth
These are just a few things the Bible says about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
There can be no doubt about what the Scriptures say about Jesus. All this and more is repeated in the rest of the Scriptures.

Thank you for that list. I began a similar list underlining in my Bible. A theme that shouts to me from this chapter, in a new way is how this chapter confirms the deity of Christ. Praise the Lord!

    Hebrews 2

We must take care of the gospel taught to us and confirmed by the Holy Spirit within us, renewing our minds daily grabbing hold of his salvation he suffered to give us. grabbing hold of the word.

Christ has been given dominion over all things, Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death has been crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. All whom would be saved.

That through death He destroyed him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

He is our sacrificial lamb, he litterly laid his very life down, shed his precious atoning blood paid our debt, took our sins that separated us from a Holy God, so we whom believe and repent and follow Christ, He has set us free, we are sanctified, endowed by the Holy Spirit, The sons and daughter of God.

believe this is an exortation by Paul that we take seriously the gospel that has been given to us, our minds eye seeing the Power of the cross Christ bore for our sins, We must never lose sight of the cross. Christ Jesus bringng us to salvation through his death and resurrection as he so suffered and was tempted, he overcame and sat down at the right hand of God. he is our High Priest and he knows our sufferings and temptations, let us hold steadfast to our Lord and his salvation. Hebrews has so much more to say about our relationship and obedience with our Lord and Savior, it is a very serious yet encouraging book of the bible.

I have appreciated the above comments very fruitful, look forward to further study.

Blessing to you all, sister lynn

I love how high and lofty Christ is described in this first chapter. It reminds me of His awesome power and and majesty in verse 2 as he is shown as the creator of the world. He is truly and awesome God!

  5. I still remeber going over this at the Hardees Fellowship for the first time. “But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever…” Then proclaiming to the other brothers in the study that God called Christ God! That Christ is infact God revealed to the eyes of humans, and That God almighty declares it!
